Nori: Deliciously Healthy

As you may already know, nori is a form of dried edible seaweed that originated in Japan a long, long time ago. Thin and pliable, it kind of resembles paper in some ways—which makes sense because the nori-making process is actually very similar to paper.

Aside from being a delicious and integral part of Japanese cuisines like sushi and onigiri (rice balls), nori is quite healthy! Not only is it low-calorie and a great source of protein and vitamins A and K, nori also contains vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and DHA fatty acids.

Leftover Nori? Good!

So, if you bought nori to make this recipe, you probably have plenty left over. Here are some ideas to use for the rest of your spare nori:

Toasted nori

This one is very easy. Simply spray or dab a small amount of sesame oil on your nori, then turn on a burner on your stove. Using tongs, pass the nori over the flame or element a few times on each side until it’s lightly toasted. Sprinkle on a bit of sea salt and bonito flakes, and you’re good to go.

Nori cucumber wrap

Using kitchen shears, cut sheets of toasted nori into 2-inch-wide strips. Use the strips to wrap oblong pieces of cucumber (cut into pieces 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch by 2 inches). Secure with toothpicks and serve with either a dipping sauce as an appetizer or as part of a meal.

As a topping or garnish

Cut toasted nori into small strips and use it as a topping on rice bowls, Asian noodle dishes, salads, and miso soups.

Easy nori popcorn

Toss freshly popped popcorn with sea salt, sesame seeds, and minced pieces of toasted nori. Enjoy!
