MORE ABOUT Iceberg Lettuce

Wondering how to use iceberg lettuce? To make a fresh, crispy salad, first decide how you’d like to chop the head of lettuce. For a classic wedge salad, cut the head of lettuce into wedges (almost like a pie), drizzle with dressing, sprinkle with small-ish toppings like bleu cheese, bacon bits, or crumbled croutons, and serve with a fork and sharp knife. Some people prefer to peel off layers of iceberg and tear it into pieces, while other home chefs grab a large knife and cut the head of lettuce into slices or shreds.

However you like to chop your iceberg, feel free to make it your own by topping it with your favorite veggies and salad toppings. From the classic pairing of dried cranberries, cheese crumbles, cucumbers, and toasted walnuts, to tossing in shredded carrots, grape tomatoes, or slices of hard-boiled egg, there are countless ways to enjoy an iceberg salad. Try combining iceberg with other lettuce and leaf types, too, from romaine to spinach.

But wait! Iceberg is also perfect for lettuce wraps because the leaves are quite broad and sturdy enough to hold other ingredients—from Asian chicken to bacon and tomato for a BLT wrap. Lettuce wraps can be substituted for bread for those avoiding gluten or carbs. One serving of iceberg lettuce gives you 8% of Vitamin A and 4% of Vitamin C, has 0 grams of fat and 10 calories.
