What Makes Greek Yogurt… Greek?

You may not have thought of using Greek yogurt in a marinade, but it’s incredibly versatile. Have you ever wondered what makes Greek yogurt so Greek? Spoiler: it’s not actually from Greece, per se’. And while most people just pretend they know the difference between Greek yogurt and all the others, now you can actually know the cold, creamy facts.

  • The straining process: Here’s the big one. The main distinction between Greek yogurt and other yogurts is the straining process. Greek yogurt is strained multiple times to remove most of the whey, resulting in a thicker consistency. Regular yogurt is strained less, retaining more liquid and offering a runnier texture.
  • Protein content: Due to its extensive straining, Greek yogurt tends to have more protein than regular yogurt.
  • Fat content: Depending on the milk source, Greek yogurt can be higher in fat than regular yogurt. However, there are various fat content options available for both, ranging from full-fat to fat-free.
  • Taste and texture: Greek yogurt has a creamier and thicker consistency, with a tangier taste. In contrast, regular yogurt has a smoother texture and a slightly sweeter flavor.
  • Calories and carbohydrates: Greek yogurt usually contains fewer carbohydrates and fewer sugars. This might result in fewer calories, but it ultimately depends on the specific product and any added ingredients like fruits, nuts, or flavoring.
  • Culinary uses: Due to its thicker consistency, Greek yogurt can often replace sour cream or mayonnaise in recipes, while regular yogurt is commonly used in smoother dishes, dressings, or beverages.
