Where Did Ranch Come From?

Now a beloved flavor all across the United States, ranch seasoning is believed to have originated from the ranches of California in the late 1950s. It was created by Steve Henson, a plumber from Nebraska, who developed the original recipe for what we now know as ranch dressing. The dressing became so popular that Henson and his wife Gayle eventually turned it into a business: Hidden Valley Ranch. The dry seasoning mix, which could be combined with mayonnaise and buttermilk to create the dressing, quickly gained popularity across the United States and hasn’t slowed down since.

It’s also really easy to make on your own. Here’s a simple recipe to make your own ranch seasoning mix at home:

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons dried parsley
  • 2 teaspoons dried dill
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried chives
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Once you’ve got all the ingredients, simply mix it all together and store in an airtight container. Now that you’ve done that, here are some easy ideas for using your homemade powdered ranch seasoning in the kitchen:

  • Popcorn Seasoning: Sprinkle ranch seasoning over freshly popped popcorn for a zesty twist on a classic snack! (And you can use it with or without butter.)
  • Roasted Vegetables: Toss vegetables like potatoes, carrots, or cauliflower with olive oil and ranch seasoning before roasting for an extra burst of flavor.
  • Ranch Potato Wedges: Cut potatoes into wedges, toss them in ranch seasoning and olive oil, then bake until crispy.
  • Ranch Dip: Mix ranch seasoning with Greek yogurt or sour cream for a quick and flavorful dip for veggies, chips, or pretzels.
  • Ranch Burgers: Mix ranch seasoning into ground beef before shaping into burger patties for juicy, flavorful ranch burgers, then top with ranch dressing.
  • Ranch Pasta Salad: Toss cooked pasta with ranch seasoning, diced vegetables, and cooked chicken or bacon for an extra-tasty pasta salad.
