  1. A Superfruit That’s Delicious, Versatile, AND Great for You? Must Be an Avocado

Avocados… Yum! They’ve become a staple in our diets, and most likely yours, too, which is why we’re so excited to celebrate National Avocado Day today with a few fun facts, just for you!

First off, did you know avocado is a fruit? It’s true… and it’s grown on a tree!

Second, as of 2015, avocado consumption in the United States doubled since 2005 and quadrupled since 2000. In fact, 4.25 billion avocados were sold in the U.S. in 2015. (We probably only account for about 1 billion of those!)

And third, avocados are extremely healthy! They target insulin resistance with heart-healthy fat, fight Alzheimer’s with Omega 3 fatty acids, and contain Vitamins C, E, and K! In addition, avocado is high in oleic acid which helps keep skin soft and hydrated, and supports regeneration of damaged skin cells, reducing redness, and irritation.

Delicious AND great for you? Can it get any better? Oh, yes. It can! We’ve stepped in and we’re so on board with this superfruit, we’ve highlighted it in our convenient and mouthwatering Taylor Farms Avocado Ranch Chopped Salad and the brand new Taylor Farms Avocado Tomatillo Crunch, as well as featured it in several delicious recipes! Check out the recipes below to see all the great things you can do with avocado in the kitchen:

    Avocado Ranch Poke Bowls

    Stuffed Avocados

    Grilled Tilapia and Avocado Tacos

    Creamy Avocado Pesto Pinwheels

    Avocado Deviled Potatoes

  3. New Innovative Training Centers Foster Advancement of Employee Skill Sets

We are excited to announce the opening of two new state-of-the-art employee training centers, focused on employee learning and development through engaging and hands-on experiences with highly technical and sophisticated machinery.

With the opening of these centers, we are continuing to lead in innovation in the agriculture industry and in our commitment to the continued education and advancement of employees throughout our organization.

We’re one of the first agriculture companies prioritizing the implementation of automation and robotic initiatives throughout our operations. The new employee training centers are designed to transition our current team members to work alongside the more sophisticated equipment and create an environment that fosters the development of employee skill sets.

In creating these centers, we have invested over $1 million in a 4,500-square foot facility in Yuma, AZ and a 2,200-square foot facility in Salinas, CA. The centers currently offer training around programming, engineering, and machine operation. These training opportunities have been enthusiastically embraced my employees.

Our top priority is always the high quality fresh foods we provide to our customers, consumers, and communities across North America every day. This is why we feel that educating our employees on the innovations in the agriculture industry is critical. With these training centers, we are empowering our team members while advancing the future of the fresh food industry. We can’t wait to see what comes next!

  4. Fueling the Future at this Year’s Record-Breaking Organic Produce Summit

Last week Taylor Farms joined the organic movement in Monterey, CA at the third annual Organic Produce Summit (OPS)! As a founding sponsor of this Summit, we hosted retailer tours at our processing facility, participated in one of the breakout session educational panels, and joined 130 other produce companies showcasing their latest organic offerings.

We were excited to participate and share the strength of our sustainability program and how our environmental initiatives are helping to fuel the future of the organic produce sector. From our implementation of renewable energy initiatives, including our unique energy ecosystem at our Gonzales plant, to our efforts in community support with our fresh food donation program, we are focused on paving a sustainable future.

“Since its start three years ago, OPS has been an exceptional show, and it is only getting better,” said CJ Given, SVP Sales, Taylor Farms. “This event provides a dynamic platform for key stakeholders to discuss the future of organics and sustainability in the fresh food industry. It’s a great opportunity to have such a collaborative event located in the heart of our largest growing region, near our production and corporate headquarters.”

On the first day of the Summit, we hosted plant tours for nearly 60 retailers at our salad production facility in Salinas, CA where we showed attendees how we produce our fresh, nutritious offerings, like our Taylor Farms Organic Chopped Salad Kits.

On day two, our V.P. of Product Management & Marketing, Bryan Jaynes, was on a panel with representatives from SunOpta, Tradin Organic, and Grimmway Farms discussing how organic ingredients create new opportunities in the produce department.

This year’s OPS smashed records with more than 1,400 people in attendance, which was a 40% increase over last year. Since its inaugural Summit in 2016, OPS has proven to be a great event focused on sourcing sustainable ingredients and continually innovating in the organic sector to meet consumer desires and needs. We look forward to attending again next year and seeing how OPS continues to evolve!
