  2. Living Green is Second Nature to Our Director of Sustainability

In honor of Earth Month, we wanted to sit down with our very own Director of Sustainability, Nicole Flewell, and ask her a little about what it’s like as Taylor Farms’ Queen of Going Green!

    1. Where did it all begin? Tell us about your road to becoming Taylor Farms’ Director of Sustainability?

My first grade teacher is the reason why I’m so passionate about sustainability…and her name was Mrs. Green (true story). I was fortunate to grow up in California where sustainability is a way of life. As I grew up and began to travel throughout the United States and the world, I realized that people had not had the same opportunities that I have had, to learn about the importance of protecting the environment. I found myself educating people at every opportunity I could. As I entered the workforce, I realized I could do this as a living, and the rest is history!

Engaging Team Taylor with a little creative “Recycling 101”

    1. What’s been your most rewarding project with Taylor Farms since you became Director of Sustainability?

The Taylor Farms Texas solar project is truly one of my proudest and rewarding moments. It was the first project in my current role that I saw through from start to finish, and it was such a great team accomplishment to bring such a significant sustainability project to a state that isn’t as well known for being very ‘green’! I’ve also loved watching Taylor Farms grow into the company that it is today, and having the opportunity to work with so many wonderful people over the years.

“Flipping the switch” on the Taylor Farms Texas solar installation in 2016!

    1. What are the three biggest things you have learned or things that have surprised you since you stepped into your role?
    • Recycling isn’t always easy, but it is SO important. You have to make it fun for people, I love to use silly games and signs around the office to grab people’s attention and give them a laugh throughout the day!
    • Having a passion for what you do makes the day fly by.
    • I am continuously excited about what the future holds. We are so fortunate to have such an amazing opportunity to do so much good in the world through our work in sustainability and providing healthy and fresh options for people.
    1. Taylor Farms is a progressive organization. Can you provide a glimpse into what’s next for the company, in terms of sustainability?

We are always excited about the future at Taylor Farms! We are going to continue pushing forward on our use of renewable and alternative energy, and we have some exciting announcements about waste coming soon…stay tuned!!

    1. We all know small changes from individuals can have a large impact. What advice would you give to someone who is trying to be more environmentally conscious at home?

Reducing waste by using reusable materials, such as reusable water bottles and coffee mugs is the easiest way to have a large impact at home. Recycling is also critically important! I recommend that people reach out to their local recycling organizations to educate themselves on how to recycle right in their area. Reducing waste and recycling has such a large impact on our local communities!

  4. THREE Things You DIDN’T Know about Sustainability at Your Favorite Fresh Foods Company!

Happy Earth Month! To kick off our celebration, we wanted to give you three fun facts you may not know about our sustainability efforts here at Taylor Farms.

    1. We love reducing waste:

To help with packaging waste, we reduce the amount of materials that come into our facilities, reuse materials when we can, and recycle what remains. Through our innovative packaging reduction, 16,277,915 square feet of paper is saved each year. In addition, we’ve partnered with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative! So what does that mean? For every one tree harvested for corrugated cardboard, seven trees are replanted — now that’s a breath of fresh air!

As for food waste, it’s something we strive to reduce at all times. This is why we donate excess product to our employees, local food banks, and charitable organizations. We also recycle vegetable by-products for cattle feed and compost. We help reduce food waste in your homes because our products like Chopped Salad Kits and Stir Fry Kits are perfectly portioned, so you can use every part of the product to make something healthy and delicious, without any food being thrown away!

    2. Ugly produce isn’t ugly at all:

Sometimes produce doesn’t look perfect, but it still tastes great. In a variety of our products we chop the veggies before putting it in the bag, so we’re actually able to use this ‘ugly produce’ that may have otherwise been rejected due to surface imperfections… and it’s delicious!“One of my favorite examples of utilizing imperfect produce is romaine — spiraled romaine heads would generally be rejected if sold as whole heads, but we are able to chop them up and include them in our salads,” says Nicole Flewell, our Director of Sustainability.

    3. We are seeking energy independence:

Our energy focused sustainability initiatives — solar panels, a wind turbine, cogeneration, and fuel cells — help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and power our operations with clean energy. With these initiatives (and more to come in 2018), we’re on our way to new heights of energy independence!

We have installed a total of 18.5 acres of solar panels at five of our facilities, which together produce 8.4 MILLION kWh/YEAR! This massive amount of renewable energy is equivalent to the energy used to power 675 homes per year.

The blades of our 398-foot tall wind turbine in Gonzales, CA spin up to 20 rotations per minute and supply up to one megawatt of power. The greenhouse gas emissions avoided are equivalent to 4,033,864 miles driven by an average passenger vehicle.

We know one bag of salad won’t change the world, but how we make it might. We will sustain and advance these initiatives during Earth Month, and every day, to continue being a sustainability leader in the industry.

Tune into the Taylor Leaf all month for more fun sustainability stories from Taylor Farms!

  7. Build an #RDapproved Salad With Staying Power

Guest Blog Post by : Mia Syn, MS, RD

Boring salads are out and hearty salads are in! Building a salad with the right ingredients means feeling full longer, and getting more nutrient bang-for-your-buck. The result: steady energy and stronger hair, skin and nails. Here is my tried and true, #RDapproved formula for building a salad with staying power.

    Step 1: Protein

Of our three macronutrients, PROTEIN is the most satiating meaning it keeps us feeling full. Animal proteins like chicken and salmon are considered complete protein sources meaning they contain all the essential amino acids, or protein building blocks, that contribute to our muscles, hair, skin and nails. Curious about the portion size? Use the palm of your hand as a guide!

Plant-based? No problem! Legumes and edamame are rich plant-protein sources that also contain fiber along with a slew of vitamins and minerals. Try adding one-half cup of lentils, chickpeas or edamame to your next veggilicious lunch.

    Step 2: Whole Grains

Add unique textures and additional staying power to your salad with whole grains like quinoa, barley, brown rice and farro. Fiber and B vitamins are nutrient standouts. Fiber aids digestion and elimination, while B vitamins are important for metabolizing our food.

    Step 3: Fruit

Seasonal produce is a great way to make a salad more fun and nutritious. In-season produce tastes the best and is higher in nutrition than if it were consumed off-season.  With warm weather on the horizon, berries are a great choice! They may be small in size, but they are antioxidant powerhouses. Research suggests that antioxidants may help slow down the aging process.

Step 4: Leafy Greens, Veggies, Healthy Fats

Check all these boxes with Taylor Farms Chopped Salad Kits. Each kit contains chopped and washed veggies, toppings and a dressing to bring it all together. Convenient, meets healthy and delicious! Try my Asian Chopped Salads Jars for lunch next week using my four-step formula.

Asian Chicken Salad in a Jar

    Serves: 3

1 bag Taylor Farms Asian Chopped Salad Kit

12 oz. chicken, diced and cooked

    3/4 cup brown rice, cooked

    3/4 cup edamame

    3/4 cup mandarin oranges

    1. Start by adding Taylor Farms Asian Chopped Salad Kit dressing to the bottom of three large Mason jar.
    2. Next layer chicken followed by edamame, brown rice, Taylor Farms Asian Chopped Salad greens, mandarin oranges, wontons and slivered almonds.
    3. Repeat for remaining jars.
